About Us
The Vagabonds are a small climbing and mountaineering club centred around the Merseyside area. Club is possibly the wrong word; we are really a loosely affiliated group of individuals united in our dislike for bureaucracies and we are also very good mates! Grades climbed vary from VS to E7, we do boast a female member of the British climbing team, but the majority are climbing comfortably at the HVS/E3 level. We have about 60 members, a real mix of ages, and a female contingent climbing pretty hard. We own a fantastic hut, "Pant-y-Fron", idyllically situated in the Llanberis Pass at the foot of Snowdon. The hut has recently been refurbished, now sleeps 18 comfortably and even has a hot shower.
The Vags meet weekly every Tuesday evening throughout the year. In winter these meets are held at Awesome Walls, Liverpool; however in the summer months we get out to the local crags (e.g. Cheshire sandstone, Clwyd limestone and Lancashire grit). Weekend meets for rock and ice climbing are held through the year at various locations around the country as well as longer trips abroad. Recent destinations have included Costa Blanca, Fontainebleau, Lundy Island, Pembroke and the Alps. We also (loosely) organize mountain biking, kayaking and skiing meets. Pant y Fron is busy with members most weekends of the year and is occasionally booked out to other like- minded clubs.
New members are always welcome (obsession with climbing/mountains essential) with membership open to anyone of 18 years and over. We are a small club and as such are not able to “teach” climbing. However keen and spirited novices will always find encouragement. If you like the sound of the Vags and want to get involved, the best way is to come and join us for a few Tuesday evenings and get to know some members. You will then be proposed for Prospective Membership for 6 months followed by Full Membership.
